We had debated going to Proyecto Asis, an animal rescue rehabilitation center. It was possibly too far, it was expensive, and we had not reserved it for the date. Jeff was so determined to see a sloth so we went(he had checked their facebook page and they had rescued one recently). We took a taxi to and from to help on time because we had to be back to our hostel to be picked up to transfer to Monteverde, the next area of Costa Rica.
We showed up at Asis and luckily were able to be taken on the tour without a reservation. We also stayed past the tour to "volunteer" and feed the animals. The sloth had been released the day before so we did not get to see it. This place is not a zoo, so ultimately, it is a good thing they were able to release the sloth back to its natural habitat. People who come here need to remember that it is not a zoo- it is a sanctuary for animals who can not return back to the wild or for animals to be nurtured back to being released safely. Most of the animals we met were captured to be domesticated animals in illegal situations.

Our friend in the lobby

Howler Monkeys. She loves to hold your hand!

One monkey went on the ground for food so the other could grab my hair! Collusion!
One of the white faced monkeys got out of his cage!
We headed back to our hostel to be picked up by taxi- to get on a boat to head to Monteverde!
Good bye La Fortuna!
(Pee before you get on the boat or in the taxi!)
The view of the Arenal Volcano from the boat.
After the boat we were dropped off at our next hotel- the Santa Elena Hostel Resort. The drive from the boat to Monteverde was terrifying. It was the scariest drive. Up a mountain, then up another mountain, rocky rocky roads. I thought we were going to go over the edge! Truly terrifying.
This town was our favorite. Easy to walk and the best food we had of the trip, pricey too.

We ate at the Beer House for dinner. Easy to order for vegans. Deliciousss!
